Alan Plater at Kaleidoscope's September 2007 Event
Kaleidoscope was pleased to welcome the highly acclaimed writer Alan Plater to our autumn event on Saturday 1st September 2007, where he entertained us all with tales from his long and celebrated career.
Alan Plater is a name that has been associated with quality drama for decades, not just for his many original works, but also as a contributor to ongoing series and as a literary dramatist. His original credits include Get Lost, The Beiderbecke Affair and its sequels, Curriculee Curricula, Trinity Tales, Oh No, It's Selwyn Froggitt and many celebrated original plays. He has written episodes for ongoing series including Z Cars, Softly Softly, Campion, Cribb and Lewis, and turned his hand to literary adaptations in Granada's definitive Sherlock Holmes series, Shades of Darkness and A Very British Coup amongst many others. Such is the broad range of Alan's work that we were able to turn over virtually the entire schedule for the day to showcasing his career and were still able to present a highly varied and innovative programme with something for everyone.
Many of the above programmes were screened throughout the day; full details of the event can be found in the Kaleidoscope Archives.
As befitting a guest of Alan Plater's calibre, the event was well attended and brought in a high fundraising total for our supported charity. Sue Coombes, Honorary Secretary of RNLI Stourbridge Branch, said:
"..Thank you all for another brilliant day on Saturday - what a lovely couple Alan Plater and Shirley were - and how versatile is he? His writing and dramatisations have been so varied - it was fantastic to see some of his work and listen to the man himself. I thought you had a really good audience - those who didn't make it missed a treat. Your supporters were also very generous on Saturday with a total of £189.60 in the buckets bringing the total to £8,479.38. Well done and thank you."
