Directors John Bruce and Darrol Blake Attended Kaleidoscope's September 2008 Event

Kaleidoscope was pleased to welcome veteran directors Darrol Blake and John Bruce to our event in Stourbridge on Saturday 6th September 2008. John Bruce has been behind the camera on many popular and acclaimed series, including Crown Court, Strangers, Second City Firsts, Tales of the Unexpected, Play for Today and more recently The Bill, Casualty and Agatha Christie's Poirot. Starting out as a designer, Darrol Blake created the original Blue Peter set and worked on Quatermass II and Adam Adamant Lives!; as a director his credits include Coronation Street, Paul Temple, The Onedin Line, Doctor Who, Doomwatch, Ace of Wands, Crossroads, Tucker's Luck, Brookside and The Tomorrow People. Appearing together on stage, our guests provided a fascinating insight into directing popular television through the decades.

Examples of Darrol Blake and John Bruce's work were showcased throughout the day, including The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes, Shadows and Z Cars. Other highlights include Rime of the Ancient Mariner, an early John Ryan animation in the style of Captain Pugwash, Wolfshead, a version of Robin Hood untransmitted in the UK and Leap in the Dark with Juliet Harmer and Lalla Ward, rescheduled from our June 2008 event. The event also provided unique chances to see the other version of Goodbye to ABC broadcast in the Midlands region and episode two of the Raiders of the Lost Archive series, untransmitted at that time.

The event, which was followed by a private party to celebrate Kaleidoscope's twentieth anniversary year, raised an impressive £167.00 for our designated charity, the Royal National Lifeboat Institution. Sue Coombes, Honorary Secretary of RNLI Stourbridge Branch, said:

"I am delighted to confirm that your event on Saturday, 6 September raised £167.00 exactly - £72.69 in the daytime bucket and £94.31 in the evening one. That is a superb amount and very welcome - a huge thank you from the RNLI and its volunteer crews. This brings the total raised by Kaleidoscope since 1994 to a staggering £9,613.41 - well done, everyone!"

Full details of the day's activities are in the Kaleidoscope Archives.
