Jeremy Paul at Kaleidoscope's March 2008 Event
Kaleidoscope was pleased to welcome the prolific writer Jeremy Paul to our first event of the year. One of television's foremost writers for decades, Jeremy Paul has been responsible for much notable original work, contributions to many popular ongoing series and well-regarded literary adaptations. His credits include "The Flipside of Dominick Hide" and "Another Flip for Dominick" for Play for Today, The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes, A Little Princess, Blackmail, Out of the Unknown, Hans Christian Andersen's The Little Matchgirl, Jemima Shore Investigates, The Gold Robbers, Redcap, Upstairs Downstairs and The Duchess of Duke Street. Many of these were showing at the event throughout the day to complement Mr. Paul's appearance on stage, where he gave a fascinating insight into his work on many well known series, the changes in the industry over the years and the writing process.
Other highlights of the programme included two episodes of Second City Firsts from BBC Pebble Mill, one written by Alan Bleasdale and the other recently recovered by Kaleidoscope from Philips 1500 format; Television in School, an Associated-Rediffusion documentary in colour on schools programming of the day; another special presentation of vintage trailers, advertisements and continuity; Graeme Garden attempting to keep order as stars from Swap Shop and It Ain't Half Hot Mum take a Star Turn Challenge and the rarely seen Alf Garnett sequel Till Death... which finds Alf and Else living in Eastbourne. Comedy fans could also enjoy Ronnie Corbett in the recently discovered sole surviving episode of The Corbett Files while an historic What the Papers Say featured early press coverage of the Falklands War.
The event took place on Saturday 1st March 2008 at our usual venue, Stourbridge Town Hall, Stourbridge, West Midlands, UK between 12:00 noon - 7:00 pm. Once again in support of the Royal National Lifeboat Institution, voluntary donations from the day raised £121.79, bringing Kaleidoscope's overall total for this worthy cause since 1994 to £9,348.04
Sue Coombes, Honorary Secretary of RNLI Stourbridge Branch, said:
"Thank you all for another superb day on Saturday - it was great to see so many people there. Jeremy Paul was fantastic - another really charming, modest man who was very supportive of the RNLI.
You will be pleased to know that £121.79 was raised from the buckets bringing the total raised by Kaleidoscope since 1994 to £9,348.04. We, and the RNLI's lifeboat crews, are very grateful as we face what will no doubt be another very busy year for the service.
Thank you all again - we really do appreciate your continued support."
Full details of the day's activities are in the Kaleidoscope Archives.
