KALEIDOSCOPE - FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Version 1.5 - Last Revised 1st January 2005
Compiled by
Adrian Petford,
Kaleidoscope Webmaster.
As a public service to our users, this FAQ aims to provide ready-made answers to some of the questions we get asked most often here at Kaleidoscope. All the questions below are based on real enquiries we have received, and the responses we have given. Please read the list before emailing us, just in case your enquiry is answered here... it could save you a lot of time!
Q01. Can I become a member of Kaleidoscope?
Kaleidoscope isn't actually a society of any sort, so we don't have members as such, apart from the organisers. Anyone who is interested can attend our events without paying a penny (apart from making a voluntary donation to charity of course!). You can, however, join the Kaleidoscope Mailing List if you wish. Subscribers are first in line to automatically receive all the latest news, bulletins, updates and discussion related to Kaleidoscope as it happens. If you want to always be up to date with what's going on, joining the mailing list is a good idea. As an added bonus, it is also a forum for the discussion of classic British television in general, so if you want to show off your knowledge, get an answer to that burning question or just meet some like-minded enthusiasts, then the Kaleidoscope mailing list is a good place to start.
Q02. Are there any ways I could become more involved with Kaleidoscope?
Yes! We positively welcome new contributions to our Web site, so if you have a suggestion or want to make an actual submission, please let us know and we'll get back to you. We're always looking for high quality, accurate television-related material such as episode guides, articles, columns, comment or reviews, and there are also a number of other ways you can contribute, such as telling us your top ten television favourites in the ongoing Desert Island Television feature. Whether you want to contribute something within the existing scope of the site, or have a new suggestion to make, please feel free to get in touch. It is, after all, through the feedback of our users that we are able to constantly improve our service, so we can never have enough of your suggestions and comment. There also may be other ways you can get involved with our events or publications; if we are looking for help in particular areas it will be advertised here on the Web site, or you can email us to express an interest.
Q03. I emailed Kaleidoscope a while ago, and haven't received a reply yet... why not?
First of all, we apologise for the fact we haven't had time as yet to respond to your enquiry. We will do as soon as we are able, so please bear with us until then if you can. It should be noted that Kaleidoscope is a voluntary organisation with only a small organisational team, all of whom are involved on a spare time basis alongside professional career jobs and other personal commitments, so delays can often occur. Enquiries often have to be researched and investigated, which can take time, and at certain times of year we also may be too heavily committed with organising our events or other activities to be able to reply quickly. We thus cannot always guarantee an immediate response, although you will get one as soon as possible.
Q04. I am desperately looking for a copy of ???? series, and saw you screened it at a Kaleidoscope event. Can I buy or borrow the tape?
Sorry, no. The programmes we screen are not available under any circumstances for circulation either to individuals or other organisations, so the only way you will be able to see the material is by attending the event at which we are licenced to show it. Kaleidoscope works very closely with the television companies, and our licences with them are followed strictly. Misusing the material would be not only a breach of that licence and their copyright (not to mention goodwill), it would also be illegal. As well as this, the programmes we feature are supplied to us by the television companies directly from their archives, and returned there once the event is finished.
Q05. Can you get me all the episodes of ???? television series?
No, for the same reasons as outlined above in Q04. If you are interested in obtaining copies of specific television programmes, please write to the company which owns the series in question (we may be able to help you with a contact address); they may consider your request, although there is often an associated charge in respect of the research and transfer costs involved. Please note that if you ask for details of a particular contact person within a television company, we can only supply that information if the individual concerned is willing to accept unsolicited enquiries from members of the public.
Q06. I run a television-related Web site on the Internet. Will Kaleidoscope help me to publicise it?
Yes, we're always pleased to support new television sites on the Internet. Please let us know the address and we'll add it to our Other Sites of Interest section on a future update. We would appreciate a reciprocal link on your site back to Kaleidoscope if at all possible, but this isn't a requirement.
Q07. I live abroad and am looking to see programmes currently airing in the UK. Will you tape some episodes of ???? series for me?
Again the answer must be no - sorry. This is for two reasons. Firstly, the dubious legal status surrounding the export of video tapes from the UK means we are not willing to do this. Secondly, we just don't have the time to consider such requests... we're all too busy running Kaleidoscope on a day to day basis.
Q08. Are you interested in swapping video tapes of television material?
Thank you for your offer, but we are not interested in tape exchanges, for the same reasons as are outlined above in Q07.
Q09. I am desperate to find out more information about ???? series for a book/article/project I'm working on. Will Kaleidoscope help me?
We are delighted to answer small-scale, relatively general ad hoc enquiries about television programmes and the industry as a public service for the Internet community. If you want more involved, detailed or specialist research or articles, our expert team of researchers are available on a freelance basis (either individually or collectively) for a negotiable fee. Please contact us with your requirements (in as much detail as possible, please), and we will get back to you with a personal quotation based on our current rates.
Thanks for taking the time to read the Kaleidoscope FAQ. Keep checking the list for new and updated information, as the document is updated regularly. If your enquiry still isn't covered by any of the above, then please feel free to ask us about it.
