Somewhere in Time...
The real story behind the recovery of the Pathfinders... serials!

Since the summer months Kaleidoscope has been inundated with people writing into the mailing address, asking us when we intend to screen the recently-returned Out of this World, the two unearthed Mystery and Imagination and the entire Pathfinders... serials (including the previously-missing episode one from Pathfinders to Venus). All of which left us puzzled, because these finds had been located at Lumiere's film library at Pinewood Studios. The Head of Library Services, John Herron, was also suitably puzzled. So where did Dreamwatch get its information from?

According to Gary Gillatt, Editor of Doctor Who Magazine, the culprit was Adrian Rigelsford who visited Lumiere's archive for a guided tour and "stumbled" across the prints on their computer mainframe. Without checking his information (or indeed noticing that Kaleidoscope have been showing this material since 1990) Adrian promptly passed on this information to Gary Leigh at Dreamwatch. Eventually the error was pointed out to Adrian, but no correction ever appeared, despite four letters from colleagues of mine. The real story, as regular Kaleidoscope groupies will know, is that the author Dave Rogers discovered the Pathfinders... serials in the mid-eighties whilst hunting for old Honor Blackman Avengers prints. After their transit from the old storage area at Elstree down to Pinewood, Kaleidoscope were able to negotiate for a set of viewing copies of these old serials which we screened in 1990, 1991, 1992 and 1993!

Having established a good rapport with the archives, a recce in 1991 discovered the previously-missing Out of this World, one believed-lost Mystery and Imagination and a Public Eye. Further finds over the last five years have included five Armchair Theatre plays. Virtually all of this material has been shown at our events and magazines like 405 Alive have printed articles about them since 1992. Incidentally, episode one of Pathfinders to Venus is still missing - or to be more correct: the soundtrack exists on separate optical film, but the picture track has been mislaid. Never believe everything you read in the magazines... the Truth is Somewhere in Time...
