Kaleidoscope Local Information

THE SCENE (Exterior/Day): A platform at Stourbridge Junction railway station (complete with horrendous dubbed tannoy announcements in a heavy Birmingham accent). Frank Sandford (Frank Skinner) is sitting on a bench leafing through a copy of "The Birmingham Post", and musing quietly to himself:

"There's nothing like a local paper to drag you into a mood of terrible despair, is there? In fact for me, I think it's just the word local that does 'em. It doesn't matter where you live, you can take the word "local" out of any sentence, replace it with the word "crap" and it still works exactly the same...Let's try it, shall we? [He flicks through the paper]. Here we go... a local theatre group... One to me, I think... Let's have another go... Music will be supplied by local musicians... Mr. Geoff Nimble, a local poet [Laughs]. I don't think we're going to top that one, are we?"

Extract from BLUE HEAVEN episode 2, transmitted 6th August 1994.
Written by Frank Skinner; Produced by Fine Time Film & Television for Channel Four.

And now for the page where "local" definitely isn't synonymous with "crap"...
