Thanks to everyone who attended our Out Of The Unknown Book Launch on Saturday 12th June 2004 at Stourbridge Town Hall, sponsored by Kaleidoscope Publishing. The day went really well and we're glad those who came enjoyed it as much as we did.
After three years of hard work, this new book by Out Of The Unknown expert Mark Ward was eagerly awaited. Illustrated with numerous rare photographs with many colour illustrations, the book provides a great insight into the production of a fabulous BBC science-fiction series, many examples of which are still missing from the archives.
The book's author, Mark Ward, and Out Of The Unknown's original producer, Irene Shubik, were both in attendance and their continuing enthusiasm for the series was infectious. Irene introduced an exclusive screening of a second series Out Of The Unknown episode, "Tunnel Under The World", otherwise unseen since 1966, and at that time not held by the BBC. Many thanks to the private collector who recovered the print for making this rare treat possible for us. Fans will be pleased to hear that "Tunnel Under The World" was returned to the BBC archives a few weeks after our event.
After the panel, Irene Shubik and Mark Ward appeared in a question and answer session, talking about both the book and the series, and gave many interesting insights into both projects. In between times there was plenty of opportunity for fans to socialise, meet the guests and get copies of the book signed.
Although a shorter event than usual, the afternoon still proved highly enjoyable and, with attendance up on last year's series of evening gatherings, we were very pleased with the event overall. We have now heard from the Royal National Lifeboat Institution and are pleased to report that the event raised a staggering £96.19, one of the best individual charity totals for a single event we have ever had. As always, both Kaleidoscope and the RNLI appreciate your continued support and especially this incredibly generous gesture.
