THE LOVERS
(Granada, 2 series, 1970-71)
A very influential and admired comedy series from the versatile pen of Jack Rosenthal, a former Coronation Street writer/producer who has subsequently written many fine works for both the large and small screen. Recipient of the 1994 Writers' Guild of Great Britain Award for Top Comedy Writer, Rosenthal's reputation was largely established by The Lovers and its predecessor, The Dustbinmen, a sit-com that held the number one ratings position unassailed throughout its first series. The Lovers is classic Rosenthal fare and should adequately sate any fan. Set in working-class Manchester in the early seventies, the premise is simple; boy wants to get girl into bed, girl wants to make sure boy offers her a wedding ring first! A charming formula that perfectly captured the era, enthralled millions, and made household names of the two young leads, Paula Wilcox and the late, sadly-missed Richard Beckinsale. A feature film version, again written by Rosenthal, was released to great critical success in 1972.
