Filming Wagner

Reneé playing with her sword I didn't see the chakram or Gabrielle's sais. Gabrielle was using a sword, which she had tucked into her belt. Drawing the sword and brandishing it was something Reneé was practising several times. She seemed to have a couple of conversations about it with the director (Fight arranger?), it was as if the fact that it had a longer blade than the sai was throwing her actions off. Then she started to play around with it!

They filmed this scene in a number of different ways. They did long shots, then got out the tape measures and did the close up work and then they did the background extras. Interestingly, every time they filmed, they filmed the whole scene through. They didn't break it down in to bits, but treated it as a whole event. There was much trudging up and down of the beach.

Then there was the tea break.

The tents with the blue tops seem to be the popular destinations After tea they filmed the background extras. When they had filmed the scene initially the background extras straggled up the beach behind, Gabrielle, Xena and the Gothic leader and stood around while Xena and Brunhilde fought. Now they were a tightly focused bunch, reacting to every moment of the fight.

The light was going it was mid winter over there so I hadn't got enough light to continue photographing. Also, it was so cold and windy up on the top of that hill that I was shivering and had so much camera shake that I am not sure the photos would have been worth seeing. Nothing short of an act of God would have gotten me away from my hillside while they were still there.

They stopped at 5 o'clock and started to pack up. I stayed around till it started to get dark and I thought I needed at least reasonable light to climb down the tracks or even to find my way back to the main track!! And there were definitely things alive in the bushes!

I went back to my cottage along the road and that evening there were all the Ren Pic lorries leaving the beach area.

Those explosives never went off.
